Before you go hunting for expensive drivetrain problems, check the motor mounts — they're rubber, they're thirty years old, and they fail quietly enough that people replace half the truck first.
What worn mounts actually do
Motor mounts hold the engine in place and isolate its vibration from the chassis. When the rubber cracks, separates, or collapses, two things happen: the engine moves when torque is applied (that's your clunk on takeoff and shift engagement), and vibration transmits straight into the cab (that's your idle shake). Left long enough, the extra movement stresses everything connected to the engine — hoses, wiring, exhaust joints, and the transmission mount that's now doing more work than it was designed to.
The driveway test
The classic check, done safely: with the truck in park, the parking brake firmly set, and nobody standing in front of the vehicle, have a helper watch the engine while you briefly load the drivetrain in gear against the brake. A healthy mount lets the engine twist slightly and settle. A failed one lets it lift or lurch visibly. The visual inspection matters too — look for rubber that's cracked through, separated from its metal, or squeezed flat compared to its partner. Oil-soaked rubber fails early, so a mount sitting under a leak (or a weeping pipe) is a prime suspect.
