Reading the vibration
Driveline vibration has a vocabulary. A clunk on throttle tip-in or shifting between drive and reverse says u-joint play. A vibration that grows with road speed regardless of gear says balance or a failing joint. A shudder concentrated under acceleration around town — especially on trucks with the two-piece rear shaft — points at the center carrier bearing, whose rubber cushion softens and lets the shaft orbit.
First test costs nothing: with the truck safely on stands and in neutral, grab each side of every u-joint and try to twist. Any detectable play, or rust powder around the caps, is your answer. Then push up and side-to-side on the shaft near the carrier bearing — mush or visible sag in the rubber means it's done.
The fix and the smart extras
U-joints are cheap and a satisfying driveway job if the old ones press out cooperatively. While the shaft is out, have a driveline shop check the balance — a shaft that's thrown a weight will never feel right no matter how fresh the joints are. On high-mile trucks, doing joints, carrier bearing, and a rebalance as one visit turns a shaky driveline back into the tight truck you remember.

Diagnose by when it happens
Driveline vibration gets misdiagnosed constantly because it feels like tires, and tires are what people check first. Sort it by when:
Vibration that scales with road speed, not engine speed — driveline or wheels. Change gears at the same speed; if it doesn't change, it isn't the engine.
Comes in at a specific speed range and fades above it — classic driveline balance or a worn carrier bearing.
Worse under load, better coasting — u-joints or driveline angle.
Clunk on takeoff or when shifting from drive to reverse — worn u-joints or slip yoke, not balance.
Felt through the floor and seat rather than the steering wheel — points rearward. Steering-wheel shake usually means front wheels or front-end components.
What to actually inspect
Get it safely in the air and check, in this order: u-joints for any play when you twist the shaft by hand, the carrier bearing for slop and for cracked or collapsed rubber, the slip yoke for wear, and the shaft itself for missing balance weights, dents, or packed mud.
That last one is worth emphasizing — a driveshaft caked with dried mud is out of balance for exactly the reason you'd expect, and cleaning it costs nothing.
The lift-kit connection
If your vibration started after a lift, the parts may be fine and the geometry may not be. Raising the body changes driveline angles, and past a certain point that alone produces vibration no amount of new u-joints will fix. That's a different conversation involving shims, a different crossmember position, or a slip-yoke solution depending on how much lift you ran.
Worth knowing before you spend money replacing healthy parts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving on a bad carrier bearing?
Briefly, but it degrades. As the rubber fails the shaft moves where it shouldn't, which chews up u-joints and eventually risks the shaft itself. It's a fix-it-soon, not a fix-it-someday.
Do I need the driveshaft balanced after replacing u-joints?
Not always, but if the vibration persists after fresh joints and a good carrier bearing, a driveline shop's balance is the next honest step rather than more guessing.
Could it just be tires?
Absolutely, and it often is. Rotate them and see if the character changes. That's a free test worth doing before anything comes apart.
