2nd Gen 4Runner Heater Blower Not Working: The Short List

Four suspects, one afternoon

A dead or misbehaving heater fan on a 2nd gen almost always lands on one of four parts, and the symptom pattern tells you which before you pull a single panel.

Works only on high, dead on low speeds: that's the blower resistor. The resistor pack drops voltage for the lower speeds, and when it burns out, only the direct high-speed path survives. It's the classic failure and a cheap, accessible part.

Dead on every speed: check the fuse first, then put power directly to the blower motor. Motor runs on direct power but not through the truck: suspect the switch or its connector β€” decades of current can cook the connector before the switch itself dies. Motor silent even on direct power: the motor's done.

Runs but squeals or chirps, especially on cold mornings: the motor bearings are dry and the clock is ticking. Some owners get months more out of a careful cleaning and lube; a replacement motor ends the conversation.

While the dash-side panels are off

Inspect the connectors you can reach for browned or melted plastic β€” heat damage at connectors mimics every other failure on this list and causes intermittent gremlins that drive owners crazy. And check that the fresh-air intake at the cowl isn't packing thirty falls' worth of leaves against the blower; a choked intake makes a healthy fan feel weak and helps the next motor die young too.

Narrow it down by what does and doesn't work

The symptom pattern tells you almost everything before you pull a panel.

No speeds at all β€” power isn't reaching the motor. Fuse first, then the relay, then the wiring and grounds.

Every speed works except high β€” that's the giveaway for a blower resistor. Highest speed usually bypasses the resistor entirely, so if high is the only one that works, the resistor is your answer.

Only high works β€” same part, opposite direction. Resistor.

Blows fine but never gets warm β€” that's not a blower problem at all. Look at coolant level, the thermostat, or the heater core and its valve.

Noisy, or slow to start spinning β€” the motor itself is wearing out. Squealing and grinding are bearings.

The cheap checks first

Before anything else: the fuse, and the ground connections. Old trucks develop corroded grounds, and a weak ground produces intermittent behavior that mimics a dying motor. Clean and re-secure before you condemn parts.

Also worth doing while you're in there β€” check the cabin airflow path for the classic thirty-year-old truck problem of leaves and debris packed into the intake. Restricted airflow makes a healthy blower feel dead.

Why it matters beyond comfort

Defrost runs through the same blower. A dead blower motor isn't just a cold cab β€” it's a windshield you can't clear, which is a safety problem the first frosty morning. Worth fixing before winter rather than during it.

Is the resistor an expensive part?

It's one of the cheaper fixes in the truck, which is why it's worth testing that theory before assuming the motor. Diagnose by the speed pattern above.

Why does mine work sometimes?

Intermittent points at connections β€” the plug at the resistor, the ground, or a corroded terminal. Motors usually fail and stay failed.

Blower works but the air is cold. Same repair?

No β€” that's a heat supply issue, not an air movement issue. Start with coolant level and the thermostat.
