2nd Gen 4Runner Accessories (1990–1995)

2nd Gen 4Runner Accessories: The Complete 1990–1995 List

Every part below fits the 1990–1995 Toyota 4Runner, and in most cases the 1989–1995 Toyota pickup shares the mount. Prices are the standardamericanoutdoors.com prices. Headlights carry a separate refundable core charge, noted where it applies.

Lighting

The headlights are where most 2nd gen builds start, because the factory sealed-beam and early composite housings are usually yellowed, hazed or cracked by now, and a 30-year-old reflector throws away most of the light the bulb makes.

Six LED projector housings fit the 1992–1995 trucks, all $524.99 plus a $69.99 refundable core charge:

The core charge works the way it sounds: you pay it at checkout, send your old housings back in the box yours arrived in, and it is refunded once they come back and turn out to be rebuildable. That is how the supply of rebuildable housings stays alive for everyone else.

If you want the factory look rather than projectors, the DEPO-style clear lens headlights at $344.99 replace tired housings with clear glass and keep the stock appearance.

Finishing the front end: the TRD Pro-style grille ($289.99, 1992–1995) and the Toyota tri-color emblem ($25.99) for the heritage look.

Roof racks

Three racks fit the 2nd gen, all $979.99, all built to order:

Pick by what goes on top of it, not by price: a roof top tent and a sleeping adult is a very different load from a spare tire and a Pelican case, and the rack is the one accessory where guessing low is expensive.

Suspension and steering

The panhard bar matters more than it sounds. Lift a 2nd gen and the fixed-length factory bar pulls the solid rear axle off centre, which is what makes a lifted truck wander and tramline. An adjustable bar puts the axle back under the body. If your truck went up on springs and started hunting across the lane, this is usually the part you are missing.

While you are under the back of the truck, look hard at where that bar bolts on. The rear control arm and track bar mounts are the single most common place a 2nd gen frame rots through, and a rusted mount is a reason to stop and inspect rather than bolt new parts to it.

Onboard air

Airing down is free traction and airing back up is the part nobody plans for. The options:

If you are deciding between single and twin, the honest answer is duty cycle and how many tires you are filling at once, not peak PSI. There is a full write-up on that in what CFM you actually need and air compressor duty cycle explained.

Engine and tune-up parts

These are the 3VZ-E and 22R-E maintenance parts worth buying right rather than cheap:

Air, water and weather

A dash mat on a 30-year-old truck is not a cosmetic purchase. Once the dash pad cracks there is no putting it back, and a cracked 2nd gen dash is both expensive and hard to find.

Where to start

If you are building from stock, the order that gets the most out of each dollar is roughly: tune-up parts first so the truck runs right, then lighting so you can see, then suspension, then the rack and air once you know what you actually do with the truck. There is a longer version of that argument in best mods for a 2nd gen 4Runner: where to start and the full build guide.

Current build and ship times for each part are on the Shipping & Build Times page, and on each product page.

What accessories fit a 2nd gen 4Runner?

Anything built for the 1990–1995 Toyota 4Runner: LED projector headlights, roof racks, an adjustable panhard bar and 3-inch lift, onboard air compressors, a snorkel, and the 3VZ-E and 22R-E tune-up parts. In most cases the 1989–1995 Toyota pickup shares the same mount.

What should I buy first for a 2nd gen 4Runner?

Tune-up parts so the truck runs right, then lighting so you can see, then suspension. Leave the roof rack and onboard air until you know what you actually do with the truck.

Do 2nd gen 4Runner headlights have a core charge?

Yes. The LED projector housings carry a $69.99 refundable core charge. Send the old housings back in the box yours arrived in and it is refunded once they come back and are rebuildable.
